Module introduces new telecom connection options to Selenio™ customers to reduce complexity, improve quality of service

Harris Broadcast Communications extends its value proposition for the Selenio™ media convergence platform at IBC 2012 (September 7-11, RAI Exhibition Center, Amsterdam, Stand 7.G20) with a new networking module that multiplies connection options for live signal contribution — maximizing flexibility when transmitting content between locations.

The Selenio Networking Module enables broadcasters, production companies and telecom operators to use circuit-switched transport networks to transmit and receive video, audio and corporate IT data between two Selenio frames. Common applications include mobile contribution from stadiums and other remote events to a host studio, as opposed to using more expensive satellite connections; or networking multiple studio locations together to deliver live (news, sports) or pre-recorded program content.

The new module offers direct connection — no bridge device required — to a variety of six common global telecom interfaces (DS-3, OC-3, OC-12, E3, STM-1 and STM-4). This reduces equipment requirements while ensuring that users can make simple and reliable connections to the most common landline interfaces worldwide – all from a single space- and power-efficient solution.

Users can configure these various telecom interfaces to send content over IP or ATM circuit connections – bridging the gap between legacy and IP networks. Forward error correction ensures that content reaches its destination intact and ready for air regardless of network transport choice.

“Broadcasters and production personnel working remote events need ways to increase payload and reduce system complexity while ensuring high quality of service levels,” said Harris Morris, president, Harris Broadcast Communications. “Harris achieves this by reducing the number of connections it takes to reliably send live video between locations, while giving end users more options on how they reliably contribute that content.”

Current Selenio customers can simply add the new networking module to existing frames. The modular Selenio design enables users to mix and match applications for baseband and IP requirements within the same chassis. The Selenio Networking Module maintains the same look and feel of other Selenio modules, offering a consistent and familiar design to preserve ease of use.

Furthermore, customers that add the Selenio Networking Module can support up to 240 contributed video channels when used in cooperation with the Selenio MDX Multiplexer Module. The multiplexer module, introduced at NAB 2012, combines multiple transport streams into a single, bandwidth-efficient stream. The combination ensures that customers contributing multiple video channels can get the most value and efficiency out of their applications.

The Selenio Networking Module also boosts network efficiency though a GigaBit Ethernet interface that supports enterprise Ethernet traffic over a common connection. This eliminates the need to use additional equipment or establish a separate link to transport IP data.
