Globo Turns to Imagine Communications for Help with Critical Technology Transitions

Streamlined installation positions Brazilian media giant to broadcast upcoming sports events in UHD

Imagine Communications, empowering the media and entertainment industry through transformative innovation, has supplied Globo, the largest broadcaster in Latin America, with critical infrastructure components to equip an outside broadcast (OB) truck for Ultra High Definition (UHD) production. The hybrid SDI-IP installation, which includes market-leading routing and media processing equipment from Imagine Communications, provides Globo with the required technology to deliver video signal in UHD resolution from the international sporting competition taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Aug. 5-21. Imagine Communications is also playing a role in helping Globo transition its production operations to IP at a comfortable pace.

For Globo, a UHD-capable broadcast truck was an imperative for fully capturing the spectacle and activities of the quadrennial global sporting event, being held in the broadcaster’s home country for the first time. The company decided to upgrade its broadcast capabilities with the next-generation broadcast truck, which will be the first UHD- and IP-capable production vehicle in Latin America.

The Imagine Communications Platinum™ IP3 15RU router is an important piece of the new Globo OB truck. Providing the same functionality as the larger Platinum IP3 28RU, the more-compact router fits comfortably into a half-rack of space. By integrating the SX Pro multiviewer directly into the router frame, Globo was able to realize space savings over competitive systems that require additional frames for multiviewer capacity. The Globo installation is the first commercial deployment of the Platinum IP3 15RU, which is particularly well-suited for mobile and broadcast production environments and is designed for high-quality routing of all signal types, including UHD.

The hybrid SDI-IP capabilities of the portable facility provide Globo with a transparent and carefully orchestrated migration of operations to an IP-enabled environment. Globo is using the Imagine Communications Magellan™ SDN Orchestrator to simultaneously manage all routing operations across both SDI and IP domains.

Also critical to the installation is the Imagine Communications Selenio™ MCP3, a high-density, modular media convergence platform that fully integrates traditional baseband video and audio processing with compression and IP networking features.  Equipped with the Selenio Uncompressed-Over-IP (UCIP) gateway module, the fully redundant Selenio MCP enables Globo to convert SDI baseband signals to IP streams and IP to SDI signals in a single, space-saving platform.

“Imagine Communications is very proud to have played a significant role in assisting one of the largest media companies in the world to undertake these visionary technology transitions in a manageable manner and at a comfortable pace,” said Nahuel Villegas, VP and managing director of Caribbean and Latin America at Imagine Communications. “Our space-saving and interoperable solutions help to ensure that Globo’s remote broadcast capabilities are state-of-the-art now and into the foreseeable future.”

Imagine Communications worked closely with Globo and multiple equipment vendors to complete the installation on time.
