After a decade of prioritising subscriber growth over profitability, the model broke — pandemic-era numbers deflated, churn surged, and investors demanded results. Netflix’s first-ever subscriber decline in 2022 was the wake-up call.
The industry has since pivoted to a hybrid approach: AVOD and FAST services are booming, advertising is back as a core revenue pillar, super-bundling is the new retention play, and original content spend has given way to licensing and catalogue optimisation.
