Meeting the high reliability demands of live sports broadcasting

Headquartered in Buenos Aires, Torneos has more than 40 years of experience producing sports content across Latin America, delivering more than 19,000 hours of programming annually for major networks.

Its portfolio includes production of premier events such as the CONMEBOL Libertadores and CONMEBOL Sudamericana, along with domestic leagues in Argentina, Colombia, and Peru, Argentina national team matches, World Cup qualifiers, and many other events.

The company also operates the DSports network, delivering live sports and related programming across linear channels and digital platforms. Argentina’s go-to sports network will provide live match coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with pre- and post-match programming, highlights, and match replays across its linear channels and the DGO streaming platform.

挑战

Torneos had spent years building their broadcast infrastructure on trusted, proven technology. But as core playout, ingest, and storage systems began aging out of vendor support cycles and operational demands of modern sports broadcasting continue to increase, a significant technology refresh became essential.

With 10 live on-air channels to manage, reliability and operational simplicity were non-negotiable. Torneos was looking for resilient playout solutions that would ideally allow them to maintain their familiar automation workflow. At the same time, the organization was mindful of the future. They required a platform capable of evolving toward IP-based production and UHD content delivery when the time was right, without forcing a costly, wholesale replacement of their existing SDI infrastructure.

The challenge was to refresh the broadcast infrastructure in a way that reduced risk, preserved trusted workflows, and provided a clear path for gradual evolution — while continuing to meet the high reliability demands of live sports broadcasting.

解决方案

Prioritizing resilience at every point in the signal chain, Torneos had a long-standing preference for discrete, independently bypassable components. But after careful market evaluation and extensive testing, Torneos selected Imagine’s Versio™ integrated playout platform as the foundation of its modernized broadcast operation.

The fully software-based Versio offers a robust, turnkey solution — from ingest and media asset management to playout, master control, and graphics. The platform is available as an on-prem server or deployable in cloud-hosted environments and supports all formats from HD-SDI and SMPTE ST 2110 to MPEG-2 transport streams. At Torneos, dual-channel Versio servers support 12 main and 12 fully redundant backup channels, each integrating playout, branding, master control switching, loudness control, SCTE insertion, and audio processing with SDI I/O.

An upgrade of the organization’s existing ADC™ automation layer introduced playlist redundancy that fundamentally simplifies their on-air operation.  Using ADC automation, each playlist is managed from a unified interface, enabling operators to control live switching, file-based playout, and branding. The intuitive Versio master control surface enables graphics preview prior to air and rapid switching between preconfigured sources, supporting efficient operations across 12 on-air control positions. This integrated approach gives operators a consistent user experience and streamlined workflow from creation to air, while maintaining the flexibility required for live sports production.

To ensure continuous on-air delivery, Imagine Selenio Network Processor (SNP) devices configured with the automatic changeover (ACO) personality use content-aware metrics to determine the health of each feed in terms of video presence and quality, caption presence, audio levels, and more, and provide seamless failover between signal paths.

All servers in the upgraded environment are connected to Imagine’s IOX Express high-availability shared storage, which enables easy scaling of capacity or bandwidth without having to take the system off-air — ideal for fast-turnaround environments such as sports.

“Our goal was to modernize our playout operations without disrupting the workflows our teams rely on. Building on our long-standing relationship with Imagine, we were able to do exactly that — and now we have a clear path forward as our requirements evolve.”

Deploying the Imagine solution delivered exactly what Torneos set out to achieve: a modernized, reliable playout environment that preserved existing workflows while opening the door to the next generation of broadcast operations.

By combining the industry-proven Versio integrated playout with the ADC automation platform the team already knew, the solution eliminated the learning curve that typically accompanies infrastructure overhauls. Operators now manage video switching, branding insertion, and playlist control from a single, unified interface — a meaningful change for teams that previously had to navigate between applications during live on-air execution. Controlling both the main and backup channels from a single playlist gives teams greater confidence and consistency across every broadcast day.

The modernized infrastructure also addressed the hard realities of aging equipment. Replacing end-of-life servers and storage ensures operational continuity for the years ahead, while the new architecture meaningfully reduces power consumption. And when Torneos is ready to take the next step — whether that’s moving into UHD, transitioning playout to SMPTE ST 2110, or expanding channel capacity — the foundation is already in place to move quickly, at their own pace.

“Our goal was to modernize our playout operations without disrupting the workflows our teams rely on,” said Maximiliano Cabrera, CEO of Torneos. “Building on our long-standing relationship with Imagine, we were able to do exactly that — and now we have a clear path forward as our requirements evolve.”
